FAQ

Below is a list of frequently asked questions (FAQS) related to RFID

Frequently Asked Question (English)

  • About TNG RFID
    • What is TNG RFID and how it works?

Touch 'n Go is introducing TNG RFID as a new electronic toll payment system that uses a TNG RFID sticker to pass through toll. The RFID sticker, also known as TNG RFID tag, has an embedded radio frequency chip and is affixed to either the windscreen or the headlamp of the vehicle. It can only be registered and installed on a single vehicle.

As the vehicle passes through toll, an overhead scanner reads the radio-frequency from the TNG RFID sticker and charges the toll fare. The sticker will be linked to the user's Touch 'n Go eWallet from which the fare will be deducted.

    • Do I need a smartphone to use TNG RFID?

Yes. In order to use TNG RFID, users need to download the Touch 'n Go eWallet, which is a mobile app. The toll charges will be deducted from the Touch 'n Go eWallet. Therefore users will need to have a smartphone.

    • What if my mobile phone is out of battery or have no data/signal?

The TNG RFID system will detect the TNG RFID sticker to charge the toll fare and not the mobile phone. Therefore, having no signal or no battery power on your mobile phone will not affect your TNG RFID usage.

    • SmartTAG does not require me to register and activate before using the device. Why do I need to register and activate my TNG RFID?

SmartTAG is a device to enable the Touch 'n Go card to be detected and read at toll lanes. Therefore, it does not require registration and activation.

While, TNG RFID is unique to the vehicle it is installed. The vehicle and TNG RFID must be registered in the system to link them. The registered vehicle and TNG RFID will then be linked to the user's Touch 'n Go eWallet from which the toll fare will be deducted from. Subsequently, the TNG RFID is activated for usage.

      The TNG RFID registration and activation are crucial to ensure that;

      1. The TNG RFID is able to function at the toll lanes
      2. The transacted toll fare of a particular vehicle is deducted from the correct eWallet account
      3. The Touch 'n Go eWallet transaction takes place in a secure and swift manner for the benefit of the user
    • I can mount the SmartTAG on to the windscreen myself. It does not require any specific installation or fitment. Why does my TNG RFID require a technician at an authorised Fitment Centre to install my TNG RFID?

Generally, a SmartTAG device can be mounted to the vehicle windscreen by anyone with ease. It works well when mounted at any location on the windscreen with the optimum location to be at the centre of the windscreen. Hence, no testing is required.

TNG RFID, on the other hand, requires a technician at an authorised Fitment Centre to install it on to the vehicle. Before installing the TNG RFID, the technician has to test the TNG RFID sticker's optimal position for detection, based on the location on either the windscreen or headlamp. When this is confirmed, the TNG RFID sticker will be affixed accordingly and re-tested to ensure the TNG RFID is good for activation. The testing and installation require some level of expertise which only a trained technician can perform.

If the installation and testing were not done properly, the user is likely to encounter problem when passing through the toll lanes. The reader at the toll lanes may fail to detect the TNG RFID and the barrier will not open.

Once the TNG RFID sticker is affixed, it cannot be removed safely. The sticker will break during the attempt to remove it. Hence, it must be tested and affixed correctly at the first time by a trained personnel.

    • What will happen to my current SmartTAG and Touch 'n Go card?

The introduction of TNG RFID as an option for toll payment does not impact the use of existing SmartTAG devices and Touch 'n Go card at all highway toll lanes. You can still use your existing SmartTAG and Touch 'n Go card as usual.

    • Can I still use the SmartTAG and Touch 'n Go card at highways to pay my toll?

Yes, your SmartTAG and Touch 'n Go card can still be used at highways to pay toll as usual.

    • If I have both SmartTAG and TNG RFID in the car, will I be charged twice?

Under normal circumstances the TNG RFID system will detect the TNG RFID sticker first and will deduct from the eWallet accordingly.

    • Currently I am using Touch 'n Go Zing card with auto-reload function for toll payment. If I register and use TNG RFID, can I request for auto-reload function?

For TNG RFID use, the toll payment will be deducted from Touch 'n Go eWallet. Users may opt to setup auto-reload upon low credit balance via Touch 'n Go eWallet App.
